Add Apple to the list of companies working on their own game streaming services. A new report claims that the Cupertino, California company is in talks with game developers about a streaming service. Companies like Microsoft have already confirmed their intentions to launch such a service while others like Sony already have them up and running.

Cheddar reports that Apple is thinking about launching its very own game streaming service. It’s unclear at this point in time which platforms the service will support, what games it might offer, and what the price point could be.

The possibility exists that Apple might scrap the service before it takes off if it doesn’t end up making sense. The report adds that Apple has discussed acting as a publisher with developers for their games, taking the lead on distribution and marketing for some games.

Apple hasn’t officially confirmed or denied anything at this point in time so take this report with a grain of salt. However, it won’t surprise anyone if the company does go ahead with this service. It has been making major investments in its services division over the past few years and this would be a logical step to take going forward.

Epic Games and Deep Silver announced today that Metro Exodus will only be sold digitally for PC on the Epic Games Store.

Valve has long dominated the PC digital store landscape with Steam, but Epic Games is taking a run at competing with the juggernaut. Metro Exodus is the latest major PC title skipping Steam in favor of Epic’s new space, including Ubisoft’s upcoming The Division 2.

Metro Exodus releases on February 15. The first-person shooter is also coming out for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Epic Games Store gets competitive

Steam takes a 30 percent cut of revenues generated by games on its store. That has recently changed to going down to a 80-20 split for games that make more than $10 million. But Epic Games Store offers an attractive 88-12 split.

“Epic’s generous revenue terms are a game changer that will allow publishers to invest more into content creation, or pass on savings to the players,” Dr. Klemens Kundratitz, chief executive officer at Deep Silver, noted in a press release sent to GamesBeat. “By teaming up with Epic we will be able to invest more into the future of Metro and our ongoing partnership with series developer 4A Games, to the benefit of our Metro fans.”

Epic Games is able to push its store thanks to success of Fortnite. The battle royale game has become a sensation, and it alone has turned Epic Games’ PC launcher into one of the most popular. Now Epic Games can ride that success to help establish a Steam competitor.

Resident Evil 2 just launched a few days ago, but it already has more content on the way. The Ghost Survivors is a free content update coming to Resident Evil 2 on February 15, 2019. In this free DLC, players will get to explore the “what if” stories from those “who never made it out of Raccoon City: the gunshop owner, the mayor’s daughter, and the soldier.” This news arrived via the official Resident Evil Twitter account today.

This tweet also includes what seems to be the titles of these stories: “No Time to Mourn,” “Runaway,” and “Forgotten Soldier.” The fact that these are listed individually suggests that players will be able to take on each of these vignettes as separate, presumably short, runs. Perhaps this will provide players with more digestible campaigns for the weekly challenges.

Fans seemed thrilled by the additional content, but now they’re also asking for DLC for Ada and Marvin. Have you returned to Raccoon city yet? Are you excited about this DLC? Shine some light on the situation in the comments below.

Bleak survival shooter Metro Exodus is skipping Steam to launch exclusively on Epic’s game store on PC. Publisher Deep Silver made the announcement today, explaining that the latest game in the series would be available “solely” through the Epic store on PC when it launches on February 15th. Meanwhile, the previous two Metro games will also be coming to the digital shop later in the year.

“Epic’s generous revenue terms are a game changer.”

The news marks yet another major get for Epic, which launched its Steam competitor late last year. Earlier in January, Ubisoft revealed that the PC version of The Division 2would also be exclusive to Epic, despite previously being listed on Steam. Epic has been able to lure developers and publishers by offering a more generous revenue split, taking a 12 percent cut of sales as opposed to the industry standard 30 percent.

“Epic’s generous revenue terms are a game changer that will allow publishers to invest more into content creation, or pass on savings to the players,” Deep Silver CEO Dr. Klemens Kundratitz said in a statement. “By teaming up with Epic we will be able to invest more into the future of Metro and our ongoing partnership with series developer 4A Games, to the benefit of our Metro fans.”

Deep Silver says that “any customer with an outstanding preorder for Metro Exodus on PC through any digital retailer will receive their game as expected.” And while the game’s Steam page is still live, pre-orders will end today, and this notice is currently prominently placed on the page:

After years spent as the dominant force in PC gaming, Valve is finally starting to see some real competition in the space, with big names like Epic and Discord offering more developer-friendly options. That said, Steam is still the most popular PC shop by a wide margin; a recent survey of game developers revealed that around half of PC developers say the majority of their revenue comes from Valve’s marketplace.

Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption is getting three brutal new game modes and a new boss in February. Publisher Another Indie revealed this morning that the new content would be rolling out to celebrate the launch of Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption on Steam on February 19, 2019.

The new boss accompanying the Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption update is named Cowardly Modic, and I kid you not, it is a giant, armored chicken. If you manage to defeat Cowardly Modic, you’ll unlock two new weapon sets, which are a sword and shield combo and a dual sword set.

As for the New Game Plus modes, you guys are in for some serious challenges. “The Trial of Speed” will grant you swift movement, but will rob you of your invulnerability frames when dodging. This means that you’re going to have to have perfect timing when avoiding enemy attacks. “The Trial of Consequence” will make death permanent, resetting progress completely.

If you’re feeling really brave, you can take on the “Trial of the Sinner,” which combines both of those New Game Plus modifiers. Increased speed, no invincible dodging frames, and perma-death: This is going to make for some excellent speed runs!

For those who aren’t familiar with the game, Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption is basically a Souls-like boss rush game. For once, the comparison to Dark Souls is actually justified. Sinner boasts a dark, murky, sorrowful world, and combat is extremely precise and weighty. You’ll even dodge and roll around like a fool while you struggle to adapt to boss attack patterns.

Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption is out now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Discord.

Gaming on an iPhone or an iPad could get a lot more interesting if this morning’s news of an Apple game subscription pans out. According to people familiar with the matter, Apple’s plans include a subscription service for games – something like Netflix, but for mobile gaming titles. This sort of subscription service is already live for other platforms – like NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW – though that’s for full-power AAA gaming titles streamed from NVIDIA’s gaming PCs on the GeForce NOW cloud service.

Word comes from “five people familiar with the matter” speaking over the weekend with the site called Cheddar. It’s suggested that “the service is still in the early stages of development” and that, of course, “Apple could ultimately decide to abandon it.” But let’s just say Apple goes through with this plan.

Apple Music is the first major long-term subscription-type service I can remember Apple ever keeping around. They’ve had a number of projects they’ve tried to build up that didn’t really pan out – MobileMe was a cloud-like software experience that… was bad. Apple launched a social network for music called Ping – then there was another service called Apple Music Connect – neither one really worked out very well.

bf video

They also had a gaming console called Pippin – did you know? It had an associated software platform, designed and supported by IBM and Apple, and it had several released models – some with modem and printer ports! This machine loaded its operating system from a CD-ROM. It was very strange. It belonged in a museum.

Apple apparently spoke with a number of game developers in the latter half of the year 2018 about this subscription service. It’s not yet clear how the service will work or if Apple will change the way the rest of the App Store will function. But imagine if Apple made a service similar to that of Xbox LIVE.

bf video

If Apple had an Xbox LIVE for iOS devices, would you subscribe? How about if the service included a curated collection of games that’d otherwise cost cash to download? What if there were an online multiplayer experience for games like Fortnite that’d otherwise be unavailable on iPhone or iPad?

This could go very wrong, very wrong indeed. If games like Fortnite suddenly begin to be unavailable for gamers to play at all times – where they’d have otherwise been entirely free – there’ll be some disappointment. But Apple would never do something like that, would they?

bf video

What if the subscription service were offered in a deal with hardware? How about if a purchase of a new iPod touch (2019) offered 2 years of Apple’s new gaming subscription service, that in turn allowing you to play Fortnite Battle Royale for free online that entire period of time? Look to Epic Games and seek the truth – we’ll be investigating too!

Marvel’s Spider-Man, the PlayStation 4 game developed by Insomniac Games, is receiving two new suits for our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The suits are based on Fantastic Four, another one of Marvel’s comic book superheroes, in fact, it’s first modern superhero cohort. While the Fantastic Four has taken a backseat to more popular Marvel characters in the cinematic universe, the comic giant is bringing themed suits to Spider-Man based on Peter Parker’s appearances in Fantastic Four comic issues.

Marvel and Insomniac today announced the addition of two new costumes for Spider-Man in the PlayStation 4 title. They’re part of the patch version 1.14 that’s available for download today. The first is the Bombastic Bag Man Suit. It gives Spider-Man the trademark Fantastic Four blue costume with a paper bag to hide his true identity.

The Future Foundation Suit is the second. It’s the version that Spidey had on in the comics which saw him join a version of the Fantastic Four. Fun fact: It was first back in 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #1 when Spidey tried to join the team but ended up having to fight them instead.

Watch out for patch 1.14 for Marvel’s Spider-Man on the PlayStation 4 today. It brings these two costumes for free. For those who are unaware, Marvel’s Spider-Man is exclusive to the PlayStation 4.

It has been bewildering to watch the America’s right try to claim kinship online with the hi-vis recusants, as if the French have ever demanded a reason for burning things in the street above and beyond being French. The gilets jaunesare also part of the French tradition of identifying movements by their dress (The bonnets rouges of 2013 aspired to echo the 1675 papier timbré revolt) or lack thereof: the barefoot va-nu-pieds of 1639, and the subject of our next challenge.

Like “Tory”, this was a term of abuse before being adopted by those it was applied to, in this case so enthusiastically that they also made it the name of an extra day in their revolutionary calendar.

Cluing competition

Thanks for your clues for KNICKER. It is an awkward word, I acknowledge, with KICKER among the fewer-than-usual ways in, as in Patjberry’s distressing short story “Football player taking man’s last money”. I also enjoyed seeing that it could be used as an adjective, like in TonyCollman’s dystopian “Kafka’s protagonist confronted by policeman pointing to this type of drawer?”

PeterMooreFuller gets the audacity award for “Small drawer”, and Cmiall an audacity mention for “A pound of kludos? Not if Connor keeps embracing rubbish starting points”.

The runners-up are Harlobarlo’s timely “Money spent when I replaced a missing journalist” and Schroduck’s evocative “What cop said of burglar getting cash”; the winner is Sandwichfeet’s “Ready source of kompromat more charming around Kremlin’s leader”.

Kludos to Sandwich; please leave entries for this fortnight’s competition and your picks from the broadsheet cryptics below.

Clue of the Fortnight

Once upon a time, the name Norman Mailer produced in my mind nothing but images of thick novels with unbroken spines. Since Alan Arbesfeld wrote a New York Times puzzle with a spoonerism theme, I have thought of his “Writer-turned-Utah carpenter?”

Now I also have this, from Picaroon:

7/20d They prevent issue in Norman Mailer’s writings? (6,7)
[ wordplay: synonym for ‘Norman’ + items that could be described as “‘mailer’s writings’ ]
[ definition: they prevent issue ]

It’s FRENCH LETTERS. Salut.

If you were one of the lucky users who was able to get into the Dreams beta in January 2019, you may or may not have known about the NDA (non disclosure agreement) associated with it. This means the developer, Media Molecule had restricted sharing of any kind, including video, images, or streams. But now, that NDA is no longer an issue.

While one was in effect, many users neglected to follow this request. Over the past couple weeks, user-created levels were shared with the world against Media Molecule’s wishes. However on January 28, 2019, Media Molecule announced that the NDA has been lifted, allowing everyone to share their creations.

This is fantastic news for multiple reasons. Dreams has fallen victim of being in development for over six years, leading to extra spending to keep it afloat. It’s also a game that, despite being in the works for so long, hasn’t really made a splash with the community. This beta is just what the studio needs, as it’s giving them exactly the press they deserve to sell their game. Simply stating that you can create almost anything in Dreams doesn’t do it justice.

Showing someone something like a video of a user-created version of P.T., Kojima’s cancelled Silent Hills game, will generate interest. Of course, it’s important to abide by the developer and publisher’s rules, especially if they’re allowing you access to their product, even if you want to share the incredible works of art made by the talented community. NDAs are important at times. Now that this one is up, it is possible for people to share what they’ve created. Think of it as free marketing for a game that some people may not know much about.

What are some of your favorite creations from Dreams? Let us know!
